Counselling
Counselling is a process of changing our perception of ourselves and the world we experience. This is done through a therapeutic process of expanding self-awareness and self-acceptance by exploring your intimate thoughts, feelings and perceptions. Uncovering your deepest needs and motivation. Journeying into the past to identify events and experiences that need acceptance, forgiveness and release. Once you change how you perceive yourself and the world around you, your thoughts and feelings about yourself are more loving and non-judgmental. As you transform unconscious beliefs, patterns and blocks, you are free to fully be in the present. When you are fully in the present you can effectively create what you want in life.
As we all have our own way of being, relating and expressing, counselling is unique for each individual. You may seek out therapy for 3 different reasons.
Reason one is objective support to help you face a specific event leading to unwanted and/or sudden change such as divorce or death of a loved one. Or there is a specific behaviour you want to change such as driving anxiety or fear of heights. In stage one, the goal is very clear and therapy is short term.
Reason two is about problems or issues that might be somewhat vague. Maybe you live with anxiety or bouts of depression. Perhaps you are plagued too often with self-doubt and a lack of confidence. Maybe there’s a lack of trust that is ruining your relationships. You want to be a better person, or feel happier or have a better sense of who you are. Behaviours or emotions trigger your desire for change, but the desired outcome is more of a way of being. Therapy can be 3, 6 or even 12 months depending on the depth of discourse.
Reason three is using therapy as spiritual growth or soul evolution. Sessions are regular for a year or so, and then periodic for life. This process will include individual sessions, retreats, self-help courses, meditation classes and workshops all with the objective of gaining an intimate connection to spirit.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is using a hypnotic state within the therapeutic process. Hypnosis is defined as a state of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention.
Hypnosis has two separate elements – Regression and Suggestion.
Suggestions are instructions to experience the world in a certain way. While in hypnosis, positive instructions and statements are offered to create desirable changes in your life. You are guided by the therapist on how to make changes in your experience, perceptions, sensations, emotions, thoughts and behaviours. It is important to note that you will only accept these suggestions if you truly want change in your life – a therapist can’t make you do anything you don’t wish to do.
The therapist assists you into that meditative (hypnotic) state. This mutually induced state of deep relaxation allows the therapist to communicate with the subconscious mind. The skilled therapist offers positive suggestions and therapy (based on therapist and client agreement) to the subconscious mind to bring about the desired changes.
Regression is using the trance state to journey back in time to specific events in order to uncover the beliefs and root causes of symptoms. Once uncovered, the “story” can be changed to a more positive outcome through re-framing (changing perception).
For one to experience permanent change, both regression and suggestion must be implemented.
What Is The Benefit Of Integrating Hypnotherapy Into The Counselling Process?
Your critical mind often defeats your best interests and preferred goals, but hypnosis (trance state) can bypass this sometimes self-defeating filter. This natural state allows access to the subconscious part of your mind; where patterns (both good and bad) have formed and where all your memories are stored. During the hypnotherapy process, you are more open and receptive to life-changing ideas, perceptions and positive suggestions.
As we travel through life, there are times when we find it difficult to bring awareness of our patterns to our consciousness, or, we come to an impasse or reach a plateau and feel unable to move forward. Hypnotherapy is an extremely useful tool for reaching the unconscious at these times, bringing light to the unknown, as well as connecting us to our inner strength and resources.
Hypnotherapy is also useful when healing past trauma. It allows us to integrate the past traumatic experiences piece by piece, at our own pace, thus creating a safe and gentle process.
Going into trance is a natural human experience. Daydreaming, absorbed concentration and focus, times of contemplation or meditation are examples of trance experience. I will facilitate your unique trance process by inducing a state of deep relaxation while gently making respectful suggestions, and I will join you in your journey of self-exploration using guided imagery and visualization.
